Summer is a fantastic time to be outdoors & experience nature. There is so much happening outside, both in nature & planned events. It’s one of the best times to become inspired and create art. I’ve made a list of 7 fun summer activities that will inspire and help improve your art. To be honest, summer is not my favorite season of the year (I like the cold) but there are so many things I enjoy about it. For starters, I’m a huge gaming & anime nerd. I love going to comic & anime conventions, especially Comic-Con! And guess what? Some of the best, largest cons & events happen during the summer!

I find that summer is perfect for inspiration because it’s a relaxing time to soak in the weather, my surroundings, & everything else it has to offer. It’s a good time to take a breather & just enjoy the moment without stressing myself out, even if it’s for a minute or two. I take a couple breaths & enjoy the sun. This is one example of how summer is great for being creative making art.

Whether you like the indoors like me, or just can’t wait to socialize & hit up your favorite restaurants with friends, the beach, or that awesome concert you’ve been waiting all year to see, there is always some summer fun that can inspire you to be creative. From calming your mind with a walk in the park, to chatting it up with some friends at an outdoor coffee shop, you can find inspiration & stories that will help motivate you in your creative journey. They can also help improve your skill set!

7 Summer Activities to Improve Your Art

1. IT’S A GREAT TIME TO BE OUTSIDE & SEE THE NICE WEATHER

  • If you’re like me you spend a lot of time indoors. Nice summer weather can be a great way to de-stress and rejuvenate your body when you need a break from work. I like bringing my printable drawing planner with me outside because it serves as another stress-reliever and keeps me occupied if there’s nothing exciting happening in the moment. It keeps me from getting too bored!
  • Sunlight is a source of vitamin D & is known to help boost your mood. Try taking a walk and doing a little stretching outside every day to help keep your body and mind both happy and healthy.

2. THERE ARE LOTS OF OUTDOOR EVENTS: CONVENTIONS, FESTIVALS, CONCERTS, FARMER MARKETS

  • If you want more activities to do outdoors during summer, there are many outdoor conventions, festivals, and concerts happening during the summer. You can find cool art as well as references and inspiration for your own art.
  • These events are excellent for new sources of inspiration.
  • While 2020 wasn’t the best time for outdoor events, eventually we will be able to go out and have those fun activities again. When it’s safe to do so, go explore some of these great events. And remember to take pictures of anything that catches your eye that could be useful in your work!

3. NATURE IS IN FULL BLOOM

  • It is bountiful & colorful.
  • You can go to a park, for example. There is plenty of space for social distancing & is great for drawing nature.
  • Parks are a great place to go to do some art outdoors. You can find some truly beautiful natural subjects for still life and landscape art in full summer bloom as well as some fun wildlife. Parks can also be a good place to people watch if you want to do some figure drawing, and there’s plenty of room to stay socially distanced. Even if you aren’t making art from anything in your surroundings, just giving yourself a change of scenery while creating can help you come up with new ideas.

4. GOING TO THE BEACH

  • There is lots of space at the beach. It can be a great reference for drawing calming scenes & maybe even people watching. It is very relaxing & can help you your mind alleviate stress.
  • Similar to parks, the beach can also be a great place to relax in nature and do some art. You can find many unique landscapes for reference and it can be great for people watching and some interesting wildlife if you look hard enough. Pull up a towel, umbrella, and sketchbook and have a nice relaxing beach day!

5. ONLINE EVENTS, CONVENTIONS, & SEMINARS

  • If it gets too hot outside, there’s plenty of online events you can participate in while staying inside to beat the heat. You can find many online conventions to discover artists and watch informative panels.
  • There are also plenty of online seminars and tutorials to learn about new techniques or almost any subject you want to learn more about.
  • Youtube is great place for free tutorials. It can be almost anything you want to learn, like painting, drawing, or even photography. Whatever you’d like to learn about, there’s a good chance Youtube will have it.

6. USE SUMMER VACATION TO WORK ON YOUR ART OR BRING YOUR SKETCHBOOK WITH YOU ON YOUR TRAVELS

  • If you are planning on taking a vacation during summer, you can take your art along on your travels. Bring along a camera for reference photos as you explore new places and pack a sketchbook in case you see something that sparks inspiration and you need to sketch it before you forget. Have fun out there!

7. MANY PEOPLE ARE OUTSIDE DURING SUMMER

  • While you’re out enjoying your summer, don’t just think of people as something to sketch! All of these places and events we’ve talked about are great places to meet new people. Don’t be afraid to talk to people and find out what you have in common. Who knows, you might run into a fellow artist out there!

Hope you enjoyed these summer art activities and see you in the next post!

I am so grateful for your website my daughter is a digital artist she also struggles with struggles with anxiety and multiple other challenges her art is one of her outlets and she is very good at it it’s great to see a website with good advice tips and truth That is supportive and knowledgeable I’m definitely going to introduce her to this website if she hasn’t already encountered it. She is only 17 but has given her art to certain musicians who have downloaded it or reposted it which was such a thrill for her that alone was worth all the money in the world but I feel if she wants this to be a career in the future she should protect her art because she is good and I don’t want her to fail or to feel like she’s failed ifShe can’t profit in someway from all her hard work I just don’t want her to get discouraged I need her to know the realities and the possibilities so she can flourish and be successful in whatever way she wants thank you so much
