Materials: Something to draw with and something to draw on

*For the final pen drawing above, I used a 0.5mm black Staedtler Pigment Liner pen (Amazon) on a regular sheet of copy/printer paper (8.5 x11 inches, 20lb).

*And for the drawing tutorial, I drew over my pen drawing digitally, using a Wacom tablet and Photoshop, if you notice the textures between the images are a bit different.

Time: 10-20 Minutes

1. Draw the Bat’s Body

Before we get into all the fun details, let’s start by drawing the bat’s base shape.

This will help in building a solid foundation for our bat doodle and make it look proportional.

Using a pencil, draw a vertical straight, light sketch line. We will build upon this.

Next, using your pen, draw an elongated diamond shape around your sketch line. Starting from the top of your line, make the upper half of the diamond more compact and the lower part of the diamond more stretched out.

If you don’t feel comfortable drawing the rest of the tutorial in pen, you can always draw everything in pencil first, then draw over all your lines in pen. You can then erase out all your pencil lines to make your cute bat doodle look super clean.

Great!

You now have the bat’s body. On to the next step:

2. How to Draw a Simple Bat Head

For the bat’s head, we will continue to use very simple shapes.

First, let’s draw the ears. Make them stretched-out, semi-rounded triangles that start close to the tip of the head and stop at the widest point of the body.

You can also draw an extra line inside each ear for the ear tip.

Draw a little triangular-shaped nose.

Then, draw two squished circles for the eyes right above the nose. Make them fairly close to each other with a little space between them.

For the mouth, draw a curved line underneath the nose.

Then add 2 little fangs towards the ends of the mouth.

Every cute bat doodle needs a pair of those!

3. Doodle the Bat’s Fur

Underneath the mouth, draw a curved line from one side of the body to the other for the top of the fur.

Then, leave a bit of space under the fur line and draw another curved line for the fur’s bottom but make this one more pointed and angular in the middle.

You can also erase out your sketch line in the middle if you like.

Draw the Bat’s Wings

Starting from the pointed ends of the body, draw a slightly curved line pointing upwards on each side. These are the tops of the bat’s wings.

Next, draw an outward, down-curved line at an angle with a little hook at the end, for the bat doodle’s wingspan. Do this for each wing.

Then, add the wings’ bones by drawing 2 more curved lines starting from each wing’s top corner.

Now, complete the wings by drawing an upside-down ‘U’ starting from each bone and ending at the next one, then eventually connecting it to the bottom tip of the bat’s body. Do this for each wing.

Finally, you can draw another thin line following the shape of the top wing, for the wing’s bone to give your bat doodle more detail. This step is optional.

Detailing Your Cute Bat Doodle

To add a little extra pizazz and make your cute bat doodle look more believable, try adding these simple little details:

  1. Add a couple specks/spots on each wing to give it a bit of texture
    • You can even add a couple lines or simple cross-hatching
  2. Add the feet by following the shape of the bat’s body but extend it and square off the end to make a tiny foot
    • Fill that area in with pen/ink to cover up any lines or marks
  3. Add fur on the sides by drawing a small triangle on each side of the fur, then fill it in with pen to hide the drawing lines underneath
  4. Add the bat’s wing muscles by drawing another line underneath the wing’s bone (the one that connects to the bats’s body)
    • You can color in this area or fill it in with ink

If you decided to add all the little details, your final bat doodle should look like this:
