Flowers are so relaxing to doodle because not only are they gorgeous to look at but they represent feelings of stability, growth, and happiness – positive vibes all around! But some flowers are more complicated to sketch than others. So I’ve broken down how to doodle 7 popular art flower ideas into very simple tutorials anyone can do! I’ll show you how to draw easy pen flower doodles for beginners step by step, including different types of flower doodles, their benefits, and how to draw a flower using only pen or ink.
Let’s get into a quick tutorial on how to doodle flower and leaves!
How to Draw a Flower Using Only Pen or Ink
This post includes affiliate links to the exact products I use in my pictures, drawings, & tutorials, so you can replicate my art 1-to-1. I only recommend art supplies that I have personally tried & strongly believe in, that have produced great results. I may earn a small percentage at no extra cost to you.
Drawing with only pen or ink can be daunting since you don’t have an eraser to get rid of your mistakes.
I know, I’ve struggled with this, too.
Whatever mark you make stays on the paper for eternity! But, you can dip your toes with these comfortable Frixion erasable pens from Amazon if using regular pens or ink seems too much for you. The ink flow on these pens is smooth and continuous with a cushioned grip and the best part is the eraser – you can fully erase out any pen lines and marks you don’t like without destroying the paper, making your doodles look seamless!
*But a big point of using pen is to let whatever marks happen and leave them on a page, allowing for happy accidents and drawing mistakes to happen, allowing you to continue on with the doodle, regardless of whether it’s good or bad.
- To make things easier, you can draw a sketch in pencil first, then draw over it using any type of pen, like a ballpoint or fineliner, then erase the pencil sketch when you’re finished

1. Daisy Doodle
Time : 3-5 Min
Let’s start off with something super simple : a daisy!
1. Draw the Stem
Sketch a slightly curved line for the stem.
2. Draw the Bulb / Receptacle
For the bulb, all you need to do is draw a circle on top of the stem and that’s it!
3. Sketch Lines for the Petals & Leaves
Try your best to figure out where the center of the bulb/receptacle is, or place a dot in the center using a pencil. You can erase the dot later.
Then, sketch lines radiating from the bulb’s center, leaving space between each line. These lines will be our guide when drawing the petals.
Around halfway down the stem, make 1 slanted line on either side of the stem, making sure one side is just a longer than the other, for the top of the leaves.
4. Draw the Petals & Leaves
Using the lines we drew in step 3, draw a tear drop around each line to form the daisy’s petals.
Then, sketch in the leaves’ bottom by connecting the outer tip of each line to the stem, forming a small triangle.
And that’s it, you’re finished doodling a daisy!
2. Sunflower Doodle
Time : 5 Min.
1. Doodle the Stem
- Draw a straight line for the stem.
- Sketch in the receptacle / bulb on top of the stem.
- Try to make it larger – sunflower bulbs are quite big for flowers
- Doodle in upside-down ‘L’s’ for the leaves, right under the bulb.
- Like in the previous tutorial, sketch in lines for the leaves and radiate them around the entire bulb. You can use pencil for this step if you’re worried about making mistakes.
- a. When drawing sunflower petals, you can reference the sunflower leaf shape I drew in the corner
- b. Using the leaf shape, try your best to draw that shape around each of the bulb’s lines. Your doodle should start looking like a sunflower.
- c. To complete the leaves, draw triangles around the bent portion of the line or just connect the tip to the lower half of the leaf?
The finished sunflower doodle should look something like this. Cute, right?
You can doodle in a smaller circle inside the bulb and add a few dots for a bit of detail if you’d like.

3. Lavender Flower Doodle
Time : 5 -7 Min.
On to another simple doodle art flower idea : the lavender flower.
Unlike the previous floral doodles, this one looks less like a flower and is thinner and more vertical, with its petals pointing upwards. Keep that in mind when drawing your doodle.
- Draw the stem in a slightly curved ‘S’ shape. This gives the flower more naturalness and gesture.
- For the leaves, sketch in short curved lines pointing upwards and place them towards the bottom of the stem.
- Start doodling the petals from the stem’s middle, all the way to the top.
- Remember to make the leaves smaller, the further up the stem you go.
- You can use my lavender leaf doodle on the right to help you mimic drawing the leaves.
- Doodle in the lavender’s leaves by drawing around or above the leaf lines.
4. Tulip Pen Doodle
Time : 5 Min.
Now, let’s try doodling a simple tulip.
These flowers have a very unique look due to their wide bulb and closed petals, so emphasize that when sketching these.
- Start drawing the tulip’s stem with a slightly curved vertical line. Super easy, right?
- Sketch 2 curved lines touching each other, underneath the stem for the leaves and make sure there’s space between the stem.
- Doodle in the leaves around the leaf sketch lines.
- Draw the tulip’s bulb in a wide ‘U’-shape on top of the stem. You can tilt it if you’d like to give it more motion and gesture.
- In the bulb, sketch 2 curved lines facing each other and make them higher than the rest of the bulb. These are guidelines for drawing the petals.
- Lastly, let’s doodle in the tulip’s petals!
- Draw 2 round shapes each coming from lines’ tips form step 5 to make 2 petals.
- To add more depth, draw a petal tip between the 2 full tulip petals.
- Then, finish it off by sketching in a tilted triangle on either end of the tulip’s bulb for the tulip’s sides / tips.
Your finished tulip doodle should look something like this!
5. Rose Doodle Drawing
Time : 5 Min.
Roses are extremely popular due to their beauty, rounded petals, and their recognizable smell. Plus, they come in a variety of vibrant colors!
But they can get a bit complicated drawing them because the thick bouquet of petals can be overwhelming to sketch.
Below, I’ve made doodling a cute rose with pen super easy by simplifying the main rose bulb, among other things.
Let’s get started and doodle flowers and leaves!
- Rose Bulb / Center : Just doodle a spiral, making the outer area wider while the center is more compact. I started from the spiral’s center but you can start from the outside if you’d like.
- Draw the bulb’s bottom with a ‘U’-shape, touching both sides of the spiral.
- Sketch the stem with a straight vertical line then add a slanted line in the middle of the bulb to show a petal overlapping.
- Sketch the leaf stems under the bulb with curved lines.
- Finally, let’s add more depth and petals to the rose head by just drawing half-circles around the back and sides of the spiral.
- You can vary the sizes by making some petals large and doodling in smaller petals / half-circles between the large ones.
- Draw in the leaves around the shorter stems to complete your doodle.
And there you have it, a simple pen doodle of a rose!
It should look something like this, in the left doodle.
I also added a few more alternate rose doodles on the right, if you wanted to try drawing it from a profile/side view.
6. Lotus Flower Doodle
Time : 4-5 Min.
Lotus flowers are so calming, partly because they grow in ponds and lakes, by making them water flowers. Plus, they’re so beautiful when they bloom.
You may have seen them on healthy food packaging or as meditation logos.
Lotus flowers are used as symbols of resilience, strength, and even rebirth, as they rise and bloom from mud.
The sheer mass of petals can be difficult to draw since there’re so many.
But I’ve made it super simple and easy to doodle in just a few steps. Let’s get into doodling a lotus flower!
- Draw the lotus’ stem with a curved line, giving it gesture and form.
- Sketch 3 lines approx. from the stem’s top, leaving space between. These are guide lines for the petals. You can use pencil for these & erase them out, if you’d like.
- Doodle in the petals around the sketch lines, making the center petal more full/round, while the side petals are longer.
- Draw in 3 more sketch lines for the inner petals. Then, draw the smaller petals around those newer lines . You should now have 6 lotus petals.
- To bloom your lotus doodle even more, draw 1 more set of sketch lines outside the lotus flower, making the side petals longer and the ones in front, shorter, while adding 2 small petal in the back.
- You can even doodle a simple ripple effect at the lotus’ stem to make it look like it’s emerging from the water.
Congrats, you’ve finished drawing a lotus flower pen doodle!
You can even color it in if you’d like.
7. Lily Flower Doodle
Time : 3 Min.
On to the last of these simple doodle art flower ideas – the lily!
This is another gorgeous water flower. What makes the lily so unique and recognizable is its anthers, the little guys sticking out from the lily’s center.
Also, a lily’s petals are basically thin and over-sized triangles, making them super easy to sketch and doodle.
- Literally, for the 7th time, yes, let’s draw the stem using a straight vertical line.
- And again, sketch in the leaf bottoms with slightly curved, angled lines.
- Draw a triangle over the stem. This’ll be the front lily petal. Then, sketch the top of the leaves using shorter curved lines.
- Doodle in pointed petals around the first/front petal, making them pointed.
- You should now have a total of 5 lily petals.
- Let’s finish this easy flower doodle with some extra details.
- Draw 2 thin lines from the lily’s center, for the anthers. Then block-in 2 small rectangles with your pen, one for each tip of the anthers. Now your doodle is really looking like a cute lily!
- Halfway underneath the front petal, draw a thicker pen line underneath it, following the petal’s shape. This is the lily flower’s base and give’s t more dimension and depth.
- Last, draw thin lines with your pen in the center of each petal for detail and crease.
Congrats, you’re finished with doodling a lily using pen!
It should look something like this.
