Grab some drawing supplies and let’s draw!

15+ Satisfying Heart Drawing Ideas

1. Simple Curvy Heart Sketch Outline

This is one of the most simple and popular heart drawing ideas but serves as a fantastic base for some of the other more complicated designs.

Basically, if you got this down, you’re good to go!

Just draw two upside down curves right next to each other so they’re touching. This will be the top of the heart.

Draw a Love Heart

Second, anywhere below the curves place a dot somewhere you think the center will be.

Then, just connect each outer side of the heart’s top, to the dot. You can try making this line either straight or a bit curvy to make it look more like a love heart.

And that’s it – you’ve just made a heart sketch outline. Color it in if you want!

2. How to Draw Love Hearts with a Straight Line & Paper

Take a sheet of paper and using graphite or a colored pencil, draw a light straight line (you can use a ruler) in the center of the paper. Note: You can fold the paper in half to make a crease and then draw a line on that crease. Also, this technique works best with graphite, aka a pencil.

Then, on one side of the line, draw a half heart shape, being careful to not draw over the line.

Once you’re happy with your half shape, draw over it again making it as dark as you can. You want as much graphite on that line so it can transfer over to the other side of the paper when you fold it.

Fold the paper and on the back side of where you drew your shape, draw over it again and apply pressure. When you do this, the graphite should transfer to the other side of the line.

Now, open the paper.

There should be a faint outline on the other side where you didn’t draw. If not, try folding the paper back and tracing again.

Once you have the faint outline, trace over it and make a more permanent line/shape.

Your heart should look perfect or close to it. You can color it in or draw things that make you happy inside the heart sketch outline if you’d like!

3. 3D Heart Drawing Ideas

Unlike the first 2 heart drawing ideas, try adding a bit of dimension to your heart sketch outline to make it look 3 dimensional or like it’s popping off the page.

How to Draw a Love Heart in 3D quick for kids, artists, & adults

You can do this in a number of different ways, below:

  1. Shade it
    • Try adding some value with pencil or some layered color. You can even leave a little white spot or area for a bit of highlight.
  2. Draw a Heart in 3D
    • You don’t need to know how to draw in 3D for this prompt.
    • Just draw a flat 2D heart like you normally would.
    • Then, choosing either the right or left side, mirror the line of the side of the heart you chose, with a little space in between.
    • Lastly connect the top and bottom of your new line shape to the heart sketch outline using straight lines.
    • You can even switch the last 2 steps, by drawing short line from the top and bottom of the heart then mirroring the next closest line.

4. Make a Heart Pattern

Start by drawing some light lines in pencil that you can erase. They can be in any shape or direction you’d like.

Heart Sketch Outline with Color

These lines will serve as a guideline for where you’ll draw your hearts. The lines can even be heart-shaped!

Once you’re happy with how your lines look, start drawing hearts on the lines, with the middle of the hearts being the line.

This is a fantastic way when learning how to draw a heart in a creative way because you can make perfect, more symmetrical hearts, when drawing your pattern.

If you’d like to take it a bit further, you can scan your pattern into a printer if you have one.

And if you have some sort of digital program, you can copy and paste your original design to make a full page heart pattern in minutes!

5. Draw a Heart Pattern Inside a Heart Sketch Outline

Then, all you need to add are a couple of eyes and an expression of your choice.

Whether you’re feeling tired or happy, draw an emotion that represents how you feel or maybe how you would like to feel. Or just go with a funny, goofy expression for laughs. There’s no wrong answer here.

If you have a smartphone, go into your emoji app and use some of the smiley emojis as reference in your drawing.

You can try combining expressions and different heart shapes for a unique look!

7. Draw Hearts Inside the Lines of a Coloring Page

If you have some coloring pages or coloring books on hand, pick a page you want to color in. It’s preferred to pick a page where there’s a lot of white space in between the linework and something that’s not too detailed. That way, you’ll have more space to draw inside and can make your patterns bigger.

Then, pick a place within (or outside) the linework and start drawing hearts.

You can use any color combination you’d like and draw whatever style of love hearts you wish.

Try experimenting with different sizes, rotations, and forms. You can even try combining heart shapes for a more unique look.

8. Heart Drawing Ideas with a Watercolor Wash

Using watercolors is a great technique for making a heart drawing with color, quickly and elegantly.

All you need is a pencil, some paper (watercolor paper preferred so that it doesn’t crinkle with water), and at least 1 color of watercolor paint.

  • First, draw line art of a heart with your pencil – just a simple outline. Try to make it the line work light because you’ll be erasing it later.
  • Second, lightly wet your brush and start spreading the water on your brush all over on the inside of your heart drawing. Try your best to color within your line art.
  • Then, with the brush tip still wet, cover it with enough watercolor paint that you have a rich color but not too thick.
  • Start painting from the top of your heart drawing to the bottom. The paint should be fading in intensity by the time you’ve reached the bottom of the sketch.
  • When you’re done, you should have a nice gradient color from dark to light.

To make it more interesting, you can try using 2 or more colors for the wash and mix them together. You can even combine them or layer one color on top of the other.

9. Dress Up Your Heart Drawing with Color & a Costume

Drawing a costume or extra additions on your sketch is one of the more personalized heart drawing ideas out there.

A lot of heart drawing ideas tend to focus on just a flat, 2D floating heart, nothing inside or around it.

But what about doing something else with it?

Drawing a heart inside an object is a wonderful method of how to draw a heart in a creative way because you’re adding a bit more story, imagination, and uniqueness to the drawing. It’s no longer just a heart. But it can still be the main focus of your drawing.

One great way to do this, is to think of the texture and material of the heart. What’s it made out of? Is it like a crystal, is it made out clouds?

Or is it inside an object, say glass? What if the hearts were ice cubes in a drink? Or maybe they’re heart – shaped terrariums?

You can challenge yourself and try merging your heart design with something representative of your hobbies.

Get creative and use your imagination. No matter what you think of, there’s no limit to it!

11. Heart Shaped Desserts

This is one of my favorite heart drawing ideas because I love the colors, textures, and taste of desserts. Looking at sweets also makes me feel a bit happier inside.

So why not combine the two?

I guarantee it’ll make your art a little sweeter!

  • All you need to do is Google some of your favorite sweets, find a few pics you like, and use those as references for your drawing.
  • Keep it simple at first and only choose 1-3 specific details from the reference that you find appealing. It can be sprinkles, the fluffiness of the frosting, or even the cookies, chocolates, or scrumptious decorations.
  • Once you’ve chosen a few details you like, try drawing those anywhere on your heart sketch outline. It can be on the outside or inside of the linework.

If you want to know how to draw a heart in creative way that’s uncommon, pretty cool, and that can signify universal love, you can make an Earth heart.

How to Draw Earth Heart in Creative Way

Again, like in previous points, start out with a basic heart outline.

Inside the heart, lightly draw in areas that represent continents. It’s okay if they get cut off due to not enough space within the drawing.

The surrounding area will be the water.

Take a green colored tool and start coloring the continents green.

Once finished, color the surrounding areas blue. You can leave some spaces white for the clouds to add a bit more of color variation.

And you’re finished!

13. Heart Drawing Ideas with a Cute Animal

By now, you should have a pretty good idea of how to draw love hearts using a simple sketch and outline.

Pretty much all of these heart drawing ideas start off with a heart sketch outline. But what makes each design different, is where you go from there.

That being said, you can draw a cute animal along with your heart.

Cute Animal Sketch Heart Drawing Ideas

Another very popular design is to draw an animal holding a heart.

For those of you who love drawing animals, you can draw hearts on the animals instead, kind of like the designs on My Little Pony.

Or, you can even draw a simplified version of your pet relaxing on a heart-shaped pet bed. So cute!

If you can’t think of anything right away, spend 5-15 minutes writing a list of ideas of how you’d like to incorporate an animal into your drawing. But try not to make it too complicated or you might get overwhelmed and spend too much time on it. It’s best to start off with something very simple first as most of these ideas are meant to be finished within a few hours or so.

14. Fashion-Styled Heart Drawing with Color

A lot of us love fashion.

Not only is fashion very diverse but it can say a lot about us and our personalities. It’s used as a form of expression and helps define our style.

So why not incorporate that into our art?

From business casual to boho chic, oversized to athe-leisure, or my personal favorite, punk and grunge, you can use elements from your favorite fashion style to “dress up” your heart sketch and make it uniquely yours or for whomever you want to give it to.

Want to draw a bright pink blazer on it? Go for it!

How about a cowboy hat with some boots? Try it out!

Feeling extra sexy? Try drawing some lace designs with briefs or something more risque.

Whatever style you like or feel like adding, it’s up to you.

15. Kawaii Heart

Similar to #6, draw a “kawaii” heart. Kawaii is Japanese for ‘cute’.
